Auto Warranty Robocall Scam
Auto warranty robocalls have been the most-complained-about scam at the FCC for years running. The pitch is almost always: "your vehicle's extended warranty is about to expire" — even if you don't own a car. In 2022 the FCC ordered carriers to block the worst-offending operators, but new ones spin up constantly.
Warning signs
- Pre-recorded voice mentioning "your vehicle's warranty".
- Press-1 prompt to "extend coverage" or "speak to a specialist".
- Calls from spoofed local numbers.
- No specifics about your actual car — they don't know.
Real-world scripts
- "Our records show your vehicle warranty is about to expire. Press 1 to extend coverage."
- "This is the final notice regarding your auto warranty."
If you receive this call
- Hang up. Never press 1 — that triggers a callback from a human, or a robosurvey.
- Block via your carrier's spam tool (free with every major US carrier).
- Report at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
